Marcona Almond Update

In Elana Amsterdam's book, The Gluten Free Almond Flour Cookbook, she recommends using Marcona Almonds.  We cannot currently determine that the almonds are definitely gluten free due to that fact that the nuts are shipped from overseas.

Shopping Online... Be Careful Of What You're Buying

As many of you may know, the gluten free label and gluten free sales are not currently regulated by the Food and Drug Association.  For this reason, you are apt to find products falsely tagged and falsely advertised as gluten free.  The Amazon Store has been tagged by several customers for displaying products as gluten free that are not.

For Example:
Amazon's Gluten Free Store????????????????

This is what happens when companies try to make money off of concepts they are unfamiliar with.

The Following Items ARE NOT GLUTEN FREE!

McDougall's Lentil CousCous
McDougall's Oatmeal
McDougall's Split Pea Soup

Newman's Fig Newtons

Barbaras Organic Wild Puffs

Bob's Corn Masa Flour NOT GLUTEN FREE

Despite generated lists that show Bob's Red Mill as having a corn masa that is gluten-free, this is not currently true as of 11/22/10.  If a product of Bob's Red Mill is made in the dedicated facility, and tested below 20ppm, then it will state gluten free on the top of the bag and/or will have a gluten free logo toward the bottom of the bag (front label not back).

A SAFETY NOTE FROM MELANIE:
Always check your Bob's Red Mill package before consuming the product.  On some occasions, like last year's gluten free recall of the creamy buckwheat cereal, the status changed and the label was removed from the package immediately, before the gluten free list was updated.

Thai Kitchen - Mushroom Bowl NOT GF

Just a quick note to alert everyone that though Thai Kitchen's mushroom noodle bowl is listed as gluten free.  We have come to find that UPC # 737628010042 contains a soy sauce powder derived from wheat.  It also, does not have a small Gluten Free in red on the product, like most of Thai Kitchen's other products.  Stay safe and always read your labels.  Don't depend on lists to keep you and your family safe!

June 2010 Product Alerts

With barbecue season in full swing we wanted to alert you of something we came across of recently. Think you're eating your summer meals on "green" plates...watch out for any brown disposable plates, bowls, and the like. The World Centric brand is actually made out of wheat straw. While the gluten content is not currently disclosed we have made the assumption that it is best for us to avoid products made with wheat, rye, barley, and untested oats.

Additionally, a few weeks back we sampled out Two Moms in the Raw Granola and heard from our customers how much they love the product, and all the other flavors they make. However, in case you weren't aware, there are only two flavors of the granola that are gluten free: the blueberry, and gojiberry, so make sure you're reading the label before you make your purchase.

Bob's Red Mill Creamy Buckwheat Cereal

Attention!

Creamy Buckwheat Cereal, manufactured by Bob's Red Mill, is no longer considered Gluten Free as of January, 2010.

The gluten-free requirement for Bob's Red Mill products is below 20ppm. The Creamy Buckwheat Cereal is slightly above the 20ppm requirement.

As always, check every Bob's Red Mill Product for its gluten-free status. Every Bob's Red Mill product, that is gluten-free, states "Gluten Free" on it's package. If it doesn't say gluten-free, than it's probably not.
